  15. <p>     RETIRING. GARY LARSON, 44, cartoonist; after 15 years of drawing
  16. the daily Far Side cartoon; in Seattle, Washington. Citing fatigue
  17. and a feared spot in "the Graveyard of Mediocre Cartoons," Larson
  18. announced that come January, his often tasteless, always offbeat
  19. universe of hapless geeks, beehived matrons and suburbanized
  20. wildlife will no longer amuse and unsettle the readers of nearly
  21. 1,900 newspapers. The 1991 Cartoonist of the Year will limit
  22. his slapstick surrealism to books and other projects.
